Christmas in the City

November 29, 2017 By rebeccacalhoun

CITC-2017_v2

Share the joy of Christmas! Join us and bring your friends and neighbors to Christmas in the City, Resurrection Brooklyn’s annual special gathering in which we celebrate Christmas through song and story. The program will be followed by a time of food and drinks. Admission is free and childcare will be provided! We hope to see you there.

Pick up some invite cards after church at the welcome table to share with anyone you’d like to invite, or hang it on your refrigerator as a reminder.

This year we will take up a special offering with all proceeds benefiting our Disaster Relief efforts. In the aftermath of three devastating hurricanes this year, please consider how you might be able to give to those in need. For more information on how to help hurricane victims, click here.

Preparing for Advent

November 28, 2017 By rebeccacalhoun

By Matt Brown

pexels-photo-383646Time is something we manage, waste, kill and save. I speak as though it belongs to me and yields to my will, but time marches on, deaf to my demands, dragging me behind. Even when I stay on my feet, I am only keeping pace, like a child holding the bridle of a racehorse. It feels like time is managing, wasting and killing me. I’m the one in need of saving. And that’s why I’m looking forward to Advent.

Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year, a season of anticipation and hope in which we remind ourselves that time neither belongs to us nor has power over us. Rather, time belongs to God and God is working in time to restore all things. Galatians 4 says, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” Time is not our master, but the medium of God’s salvific work. And God’s work is not yet done.
Advent is a season in which we remember the birth of Jesus and hope for his certain return, but it is also a reminder that we still live in the fullness of time and God is still at work, reconciling all things through Jesus. So as we enter another Advent season, let me encourage you not to manage, but to enjoy, this time. Make an advent wreath on Sunday, use our advent guides with your family or your roommates or on your own, join us for Christmas in the City, sing lots of Christmas songs and as you do these things pray for eyes of faith to see how Jesus is using this time in your life to redeem you for himself.

How to Help Hurricane Victims

August 31, 2017 By rebeccacalhoun

Disaster Relief

In the aftermath of three devastating hurricanes this year, many organizations are pulling together resources for rescue missions and providing supplies for those affected. There is no doubt that the clean up and recovery process will last well into 2018, and so these relief efforts will need ongoing support.

In addition to praying daily for those in crisis, below are some avenues for monetary support. Also, check out this letter from the EPC which mentions our congregation in Sheepshead Bay.

1.) Resurrection Brooklyn has a disaster relief fund. You can contribute here.

2.) This local church in Houston, City of Refuge Church, set up a relief fund for victims of Hurricane Harvey and recorded a podcast to explain where your donations will go.

3.) The EPC has set up an Emergency Relief Fund. In collaboration with the Presbytery of the Gulf South, donations to the fund will be sent to EPC churches in the greater Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico areas affected by the storm. Click here to donate online (choose “Emergency Relief” from the first pulldown menu.

4.) Lastly, here is a comprehensive list of all the shelters in the Houston area and their specific needs. Here is a similar list for Hurricane Irma victims.

Please consider giving generously to those in need.
